Brumal is a district of historic Santa Bárbara, in the Serra do Espinhaço region. The district, which is the oldest in the municipality, was founded in 1704 by the Bandeira de Antônio Bueno. It received from its founders the name of Brumado, due to the large sawmill (mist), common in the region during the winter, since it is at the foot of the Serra do Caraça and close to the river with the same name.
Although the founders at first found the production of the local mines insufficient, significant mining activity was responsible for the growth of the village. A large number of people settled in search of the productive gold mines.
The village grew so much that, by 1730, the church of Santo Amaro was already being built with all the pomp. The license for the work was requested in 1727 by Amaro da Silveira Borges, a resident of the village.
The Historic Nucleus of the District of Brumal preserves several monuments, among them: the Church, the Square with the Fountain in the center, the Notary House and the old school building, today the José Januário Câmara Community Center.
